gullion way ultra
The race this year takes place on the 3rd of July
Celebrating the 4th July American Independence Day
(DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS AMAZING MEDAL)
Join us for an amazing journey around the Gullion Way.
Formed some 60 million years ago, the Slieve Gullion ring dyke was created by a massive volcanic explosion. The eruption obliterated the central volcano but left a circle of hills radiating around the main caldera. The formation measures some 150km² and is considered the finest example of its type in Britain and Ireland.
Starting in Newry at 8am on the 3rd July 2022 at the Newry & District Gateway club, 20 Kilmorey Street Newry, BT34 2DE and finishing in the same Location, your total Journey will be approximately 64k (however there are a few unavoidable diversions on the route so it will vary a little, but as ultra runners we are pretty sure you wont mind this too much).
The route is approximately 90% road and 10% Trail. The majority of the roads are quiet, rural country roads and the views will blow your mind; they are some of the best views across Northern Ireland. This may be the hilliest ultra in Northern Ireland and is an event you will not want to miss.
This event is run in line with our core values as race organisers - encouraging runners to take running back to nature and to be self sufficient - to simply enjoy the freedom of running wild and appreciating the natural beauty around them and there is plenty to appreciate on this course. We pride ourselves on being a NO TRACE event organiser; leaving no impact on the environment. We do not use route markings and we do not put up signs along the route. You are self sufficient throughout the event, carrying your own equipment - no water bottles/packages are provided, only water to refill your own carriers and so there is nothing to interfere with the environment. We provide a detailed set of instructions of the route that you carry with you on waterproof paper (this is tried and tested and has been well received by all of our previous participants). Given the distance of this event, we will provide water water refill stations at certain points.
This is a challenging course which offers a unique experience to run the Gullion way as part of an organised event. Hills are aplenty and you will be rewarded with amazing mountain views overlooking the Ring of Gullion and the landscape of South Armagh. Along the way you pass Clontygora Court Grave, Moyry Castle, Killeavy Old Churches, Craigmore Viaduct and Slieve Gullion Forest park. Runners traverse the slopes of Fathom Mountain, Black Mountain, Camlough Mountain and Slieve Gullion (The Ring of Gullion's highest peak)
* Cut off times will be 7 hours at 26 miles (Slieve Gullion forest park) and 10 hours to complete *
