The Campaign
POSTPONED TO 2023 DUE TO COVID
What is the Campaign all about?
The Campaign is a new, unique event for Northern Ireland hosted by: We Run Wild Ni. It is a continuous event designed for Ultra runners and those looking to enter the Ultra scene. The event covers distances of 100 miles, 50 miles and also has a starter option from 23.8 miles up to 39.3 miles and starts and finishes in Carrickfergus.
The concept is formed around celebrating the famous Carrickfergus Churchill Tank that was designed by Harland and Wolff and built in Carrickfergus at a Factory located on the Woodburn Road. The Churchill Tank was one of the most successful tanks to have been used in various CAMPAIGNS across World War 2. We have adopted the names of some of these campaigns for our different event distances.
A campaign is a phase of war involving a series of operations related in time and space and aimed toward a single specific strategic objective. This typically includes a series of battles over a period of time or considerable distance.
Opposite Carrickfergus Castle you will see one of the Carrickfergus Churchill tanks - a fully restored tank which was actually used in World War 2 by C Squadron of the North Irish Horse Regiment. This tank was gifted to Carrickfergus by the North Irish Horse Regiment and you will run past this tank on the event.
So how does it work?
We have devised three Campaigns which all involved a series of battles. Each battle must be completed before you can move onto the next one. If you are successful in all your battles you will have completed your campaign!
We have three different campaigns - the 100 mile and the 50 mile events follow 3 courses and the starter option will follow 2 chosen courses.
All Campaigns will start at 12.00 noon and will have time limits that will be strictly enforced.
100 MILE North Africa Campaign
TIME LIMIT – TBC
In essence you have a base camp - you run 6 battles, returning to base camp at the end of each battle and head out again. The courses are not signed or marshalled - as with all our events, you are provided with a detailed road book which you follow.
You will follow 3 battle courses during your campaign: 26.2 miles, 13.1 miles and 10.7 miles. Each of these will be repeated twice totalling 100miles and on the second time around you will run in the opposite direction. Along each one you will be required to bring back a trophy located somewhere on the battle which proves that you have completed that entire battle. Upon arrival at base camp, you hand over your trophy, we provide with your next road book and away you go.
You will not know until the day of the race what order the battles are run in. The Race Director will make this decision and inform you on the day. For example, he may choose the 10.7 first, then the 26.2 then the 13.1 or he may choose the 26.2 first and the 26.2 second - the race director has the final say. You will only be provided with your road book for the next battle when you handover your trophy.
For example: if your first battle is the 13.1 you will run that battle, collect your trophy along the way come back to base camp, hand over your trophy to be verified, you will then then receive your road book for your next battle. You can refuel, rest, change your kit, use the toilet or you can just head straight out, You will be allowed a maximum of 30 minutes at base camp at the end of each battle before you must be back out. These time limits will be enforced.
If you return without a trophy you will be DNF and will not receive your next battle instructions. Likewise, if you do not leave within the 30 minutes you will not be allowed to carry on and you will be DNF. NO EXCEPTIONS TO THESE RULES. This is part of the campaign should you wish to accept the challenge.
Each battle starts and finishes at base camp and you will have the option to pitch a tent or a Gazebo for the duration of the event.
There will be toilet facilities located at base camp. As with all our events, this is a self- sufficient event – you MUST carry and supply your own food/water for the duration of the event. At base camp we will provide water to refill your bottles ONLY. When you complete the Campaign and finish your chosen distance, you will be provided with a hot meal (for competitors only).
50 MILE Italian Campaign

This campaign is designed for those of you who would like to try an Ultra or just to take part in this event by running several races over the entire time period (TBC). This will introduce you to 24+ hour events and allow you to get a sense of what its like to take part in the Ultra scene without the pressure of running a 50/100 mile and enjoy your events in a more relaxed way. In this campaign we let you choose the distances you want to run with a total possible running distance of 39 miles.
Here is how the Western Front Campaign works:
There are 3 battles (courses) to choose from: 26.2 miles, 13.1 miles and 10.7 miles. You must choose a minimum of 2 of these battles, but the maximum you can run is 39.3 miles. You can only choose the 26.2 mile battle once. Your selection will be made at the time of your registration and cannot be changed on the day of the race – NO EXCEPTIONS.
Along each of these battles you will be required to bring back a trophy located somewhere on the battle which proves that you have completed that entire battle. Upon arrival at base camp, you hand over your trophy, we provide with your next road book and away you go.

If you return without a trophy you will be DNF and will not receive your next battle instructions. NO EXCEPTIONS. This is part of the campaign should you wish to accept the challenge.
Each mission starts and finishes at base camp and you will have the option to pitch a tent or a Gazebo for the duration of the event.
THE DIFFERENCE WITH THE WESTERN FRONT CAMPAIGN IS: AS THIS IS AN INTRODUCTION TO DISTANCE RUNNING WE WILL ALLOW YOU EXTRA TIME (TBC) TO COMPLETE THIS EVENT. YOU CAN CHOOSE TO RUN YOUR EVENTS ON ONE DAY (WITH ONLY A 30 MINUTE BREAK BETWEEN. IF YOU DO NOT LEAVE WITHIN THE 30 MINUTES YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CARRY ON AND YOU WILL DNF. NO EXCEPTIONS). IF YOU CHOOSE TO RUN THREE BATTLES, TWO MUST BE ON DAY 1 AND YOU CAN THEN RETURN ON DAY TWO TO RUN YOUR THIRD EVENT (SPECIFIC TIMES WILL BE ANNOUNCED).
For all distances:
As with all our events, this is a self sufficient event. We provide WATER ONLY at base camp. You MUST carry sufficient water and food on each battle you run.
